Salmonella Prevention and Control with AQUAZIX® PLUS

In BBZIX, we are specialist in biosecurity and water treatments, and through years, we have been successfully developing Salmonella control through the water by using AQUAZIX® PLUS. Its efficiency as a control tool for Salmonella, has been tested and studied in independent centres like ‘’Centro de Sanidad Avícola de Cataluña y Aragón’’ (CESAC), where in 2008 a study was carried out proving its capacity to control the colonisation of the digestive system by Salmonella.

Nowadays, more and more often, every single thing related to biosecurity in our farms is gaining importance. We are more aware and we are understanding biosecurity as a basic pillar for a safe production, in which all hazards must be detected and controlled properly in order to grant food safety and a suitable state of protection of the final consumer.

Within these hazards, one of the most likely to be found are Salmonellosis, a group of diseases caused by bacteria from the genus Salmonella, which are highly present in poultry production, both, broiler production and egg production. Its importance abides, not only on the clinical and subclinical consequences, but also on the fact that they are one of the main causes of food poisoning worldwide.

They way in for this bacteria into our farm can be diverse, through new animals, infected feed, pests (rats and wild birds acting as a vector) or even contaminated waters, and once inside, the infection happens directly through contact with an infected animal (faecal-oral), but also through aerial ways (can be suspended on the air). Also, in order to know the way of acting, we must know that many animals will become carriers of the disease but they will never develop the disease, although they will transmit it to other animals or to the food chain.

Because of all of it, Biosecurity measures are extremely important to control Salmonella, and a thorough plan must be followed on a strict way, covering from farm to plate.

Its efficiency as a control tool for Salmonella, has been tested and studied in independent centres like ‘’Centro de Sanidad Avícola de Cataluña y Aragón’’ (CESAC), where in 2008 a study was carried out proving its capacity to control the colonisation of the digestive system by Salmonella. This study was performed on laying hens, experimentally infected with two doses of Salmonella in consecutive days (6,35 x 10 ⁶ ufc y 6 x 10 ⁶ ufc de Salmonella enteritidis per animal), studying the bacterial colonisation in the intestine but also on some organs (liver and spleen).

A group is drinking water treated with AQUAZIX® PLUS (at a dose of 140ml per 1000 L of water) while the other group (control) is drinking water without our product. From day 17 post-inoculation, we could see a reduction of 30% when isolating Salmonella enteritidis from the group treated with AQUAZIX® PLUS, versus the group control.

On the caecum, from day 22 postinoculation, a reduction of 100% was observed when isolating Salmonella enteritidis  (liver and spleen) from the group treated with AQUAZIX® PLUS, versus the group control. The animals treated with AQUAZIX® PLUS, could get rid of faecal contamination. Besides, we could see, that these animals produced a 16,38% more of eggs than the animals not treated with AQUAZIX® PLUS.

Results showed that AQUAZIX® PLUS helps to eliminate Salmonella from the caecum and works as a barrier for a possible colonisation of the hens organisms, avoiding the entrance through the intestine wall.

Therefore, it is a high value tool to control Salmonella, since at impeding the colonisation of the digestive tract, its excrete through faecal material will be dramatically reduced, decreasing this way the infectious risk.

AQUAZIX® PLUS is a product based on Hydrogen Peroxide, silver and Enterozix nucleus. It will provide water with a high microbiological quality, due to its great biocidal activity boosted by silver. Due to all of these, and as we said before, the treatment with AQUAZIX® PLUS is not only going to provide with an excellent microbiological quality water, but also will help to keep the immune system of our animals in an optimum state, boosting their intestinal health and avoiding the digestive colonisation of Salmonella, but any other microorganism out of the saprophytic flora. It will also keep our water systems working properly. The success is on the daily basis treatment AQUAZIX® PLUS, which has to be properly protocolised within our biosecurity plan.
