EU rules, which came into force on 1 January 2008, spreads responsibility for food safety to each and every party involved in the sector, from the primary production site to its sale on the market. "Consumers can be sure that the best practice in food safety will be applied from now on to each stage in the production chain", stated the European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection, Markos Kyprianou.
